Analysis of the Effect of Financial Performance on Dividend Payout Ratio in Members of Mining Industry Holding Companies with Capital Expenditure as Moderation Variables
Introduction
The mining industry is a significant contributor to the global economy, and holding companies in this sector play a crucial role in managing the financial performance of their subsidiaries. One of the key aspects of financial performance is the dividend payout ratio (DPR), which reflects the company's ability to distribute profits to shareholders. This study aims to analyze the effect of financial performance on DPR in members of the mining industry holding companies (HIP) with capital expenditure (Capex) as a moderation variable.
Background
The mining industry is characterized by high capital expenditure, which can have a significant impact on the financial performance of holding companies. The use of debt and equity financing is common in this industry, and the management of capital structures is critical to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the company. The dividend payout ratio is an important indicator of a company's financial performance, as it reflects the ability of the company to distribute profits to shareholders.
Methodology
This study uses a panel regression analysis with a significance level of α = 5% to examine the effect of financial performance on DPR in members of HIP. The analysis focuses on public companies that are members of HIP and have dwiwarna shares. The financial performance variables used in this study include Return on Equity (ROE), cash ratio, current ratio, debt to asset ratio (DAR), and debt to equity ratio (DER).
Results
The results of the analysis showed that financial performance had a simultaneous effect on the DPR of 39.86%. This means that although there is a contribution from financial performance, 60.14% of the DPR is influenced by other factors that are not identified in this study. In the profitability variable, ROE shows an insignificant negative effect on the DPR. Meanwhile, in the liquidity aspect, the cash ratio shows an insignificant positive effect, while the current ratio has a negative effect which is also not significant on the DPR.
In terms of leverage, DAR shows a significant positive influence on the DPR, as well as the DER which also has a positive and significant impact. This shows that the higher the use of debt, the greater the dividend portion paid to shareholders, which might reflect management strategies in maintaining investor confidence.
Moderation Variable
When testing the moderation variable, the results showed that Capex played a significant role in weakening the effect of financial performance (especially Cash Ratio, Current Ratio, and DAR) on the DPR. In this context, HIP members need to be more careful in managing capital structures consisting of debt and equity and prioritizing capital expenditure. Although DAR can increase the Parliament, high capital expenditure (capex) can reduce the portion of dividends distributed, although the investment carried out has a good potential return in the future.
Conclusion
The results of this study highlighted the importance of wise financial management to maximize the value of the company while still meeting the obligation to distribute dividends to shareholders. HIP members need to consider that the investment made, even though it provides a long-term profit potential, must be managed in such a way as not to hamper their ability to pay dividends to shareholders. Therefore, continuous evaluation of financial performance and capex regulation becomes crucial so that the company can achieve an optimal balance between investment growth and dividend payment.
Implications
The findings of this study have several implications for HIP members. Firstly, they need to be more careful in managing capital structures consisting of debt and equity and prioritizing capital expenditure. Secondly, they need to consider the potential impact of high capital expenditure on the dividend payout ratio. Finally, they need to continuously evaluate their financial performance and capex regulation to ensure that they can achieve an optimal balance between investment growth and dividend payment.
Limitations
This study has several limitations. Firstly, the analysis is limited to public companies that are members of HIP and have dwiwarna shares. Secondly, the study only examines the effect of financial performance on DPR and does not consider other factors that may influence the dividend payout ratio. Finally, the study uses a panel regression analysis, which may not capture the complex relationships between the variables.
