Introduction

Breastfeeding is a vital aspect of a child's early life, providing essential nutrients and antibodies that help protect against infections and diseases. A good breastfeeding pattern can be the first step in preventing nutritional problems, especially malnutrition in children. Nutrition problems in children under five are often rooted in the lack of nutritional intake from an early age, and inadequate exclusive breastfeeding. Optimal breastfeeding is very important to meet the nutritional needs of infants, especially at the age of 0 to 6 months. In this study, we will discuss breastfeeding patterns and nutritional status of infants aged 0-6 months in the working area of Medan Tuntung Health Center.

Methodology

This study uses a descriptive method with a cross-sectional research design. The sample studied consisted of 72 babies aged 0-6 months in the Medan Tuntung Puskesmas area. Data regarding breastfeeding patterns is obtained through interviews with baby mothers, while the baby's nutritional status is measured through weight weighing and measurement of body length.

Breastfeeding Patterns

The results showed that of the total babies studied, only 13.9% had good breastfeeding patterns, while 86.1% showed poor breastfeeding patterns. The majority of babies, namely 65.3%, get partially breast milk, and as many as 79.2% of them managed to get colostrum. A good breastfeeding frequency is recorded more than 8 times a day (98.6%), with an average of about 10-30 minutes breastfeeding (55.6%). However, inappropriate breastfeeding position is also a concern, where 51.4% of mothers do not apply good breastfeeding positions.

Exclusive Breastfeeding

However, in this study, 51.4% of mothers did not apply good breastfeeding positions, which can lead to difficulties in latching and may result in inadequate milk supply.

In terms of nutritional status, in general the baby has a good nutritional status, based on the weight index of age (BB/U) and normal nutritional status according to body length to age (Pb/U) and body weight to body length (BB/Pb). Nevertheless, there are a number of babies who experience nutritional problems, including 1.4% experiencing malnutrition, 4.2% experiencing malnutrition, 4.2% stunting, 5.6% wasting, and 1.4% obesity.

This can be done through the class of pregnant women or by advising midwives in the working area of the Puskesmas to provide information related to proper breastfeeding patterns during pregnancy and childbirth examination. With these efforts, it is expected to increase public awareness about the importance of proper breastfeeding patterns and support the achievement of optimal nutritional status for infants.
