Analysis of Socio-Economic Factors on Capture Fish Production in Bagan Deli Village, Medan Belawan

Introduction

The fishing industry is a vital sector in many coastal communities, providing a source of income and livelihood for millions of people worldwide. In Indonesia, the fishing industry is a significant contributor to the country's economy, with the majority of fishing activities taking place in the waters of the Indonesian archipelago. One of the key areas of focus for the fishing industry in Indonesia is the capture fish production, which involves the harvesting of fish and other seafood from the wild. In this study, we examine the socio-economic factors that affect capture fish production in Bagan Deli Village, Medan Belawan, a coastal community in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Background

Kelurahan Bagan Deli, Medan Belawan District, Medan City, became the location of research on the influence of socio-economic factors on capture fish production in 2007. This study involved 30 fishermen as a random selected sample. Data was collected through direct interviews using a questionnaire, then analyzed using descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the socio-economic conditions of fishermen in Bagan Deli Village and the factors that affect the production of capture fish.

Methodology

The study used a quantitative approach, with data collected through direct interviews using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed to gather information on the socio-economic characteristics of the fishermen, including their experience of fishing, age of fishing gear, and number of labor. The data was then analyzed using descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression to identify the factors that affect capture fish production.

Results

The results of this study show that fishermen in Bagan Deli Village use a large ship with an average size of 27.20 GT and carry out 114.80 fishing trips per year. The total cost of capture fish production per year reaches Rp 330,935,139.50, producing an average net income per year of Rp 10,541,120,486,89. The average monthly income of fishermen reaches Rp 1,108,258.05, far higher than the Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP) of Rp 820,000 per month.

Multiple linear regression analysis shows a significant effect of several socio-economic factors on capture fish production. Experience of sea, age of fishing gear, and partial workforce significantly affects fish production. Experience of fishing and age of fishing gear together also significantly affects fish production, while the number of labor does not show significant influence.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the fishing business carried out by fishermen in Bagan Deli has been efficient, with a higher ROI (Return on Investment) value than a deposit interest rate at a bank per year. This efficiency shows that fishermen are able to obtain adequate profits from fishing business.

This research has some important implications:

The important role of the experience of fishing and the age of fishing gear to fishing fish production. This shows the need for training and assistance programs to improve fishermen's skills and maintain the condition of fishing gear to remain optimal. The importance of optimizing the number of labor. Although the number of workers does not have a significant effect on overall, this study shows that the use of appropriate human resources can increase efficiency and productivity. Policies that support the sustainability of fishing business. Efficiency of fishing business is proof of the success of fishermen in managing marine resources. It is important for the government to formulate policies that support the sustainability of marine resources and the welfare of fishermen, such as regulating fishing zones, boat and fishing assistance programs, as well as fishing insurance programs.

Conclusion

This research provides an overview of the socio-economic conditions of fishermen in the Deli Bagan and the factors that affect the production of capture fish. The results can be a reference for the government and stakeholders in formulating more effective policies and programs to improve the welfare of fishermen and support the sustainability of fishing businesses.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

The government should provide training and assistance programs to improve fishermen's skills and maintain the condition of fishing gear to remain optimal.
The government should optimize the number of labor to increase efficiency and productivity.
The government should formulate policies that support the sustainability of marine resources and the welfare of fishermen, such as regulating fishing zones, boat and fishing assistance programs, as well as fishing insurance programs.

Limitations

This study has some limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the study only focused on the socio-economic factors that affect capture fish production in Bagan Deli Village, and did not consider other factors that may also affect the production of capture fish. Secondly, the study only used a random sample of 30 fishermen, which may not be representative of the entire fishing community in Bagan Deli Village.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to investigate the socio-economic factors that affect capture fish production in other coastal communities in Indonesia. Additionally, research should be conducted to identify the factors that affect the sustainability of fishing businesses and the welfare of fishermen.
