Adaptability Test of Several Potato Genotypes (Solanum tuberosum L.) in the Highlands and Medium: Looking for Ideal Genotypes for Production and Industry

Introduction

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most widely cultivated and consumed crops globally, with a significant impact on food security and the economy. The adaptability and stability of potato genotypes are crucial factors in determining their suitability for production and industry. This study aims to investigate the adaptability and stability of several potato genotypes in the highlands and medium, with a focus on identifying ideal genotypes for production and industry.

Materials and Methods

This study was conducted in two locations, namely the medium plain (Sukamakmur, 700 m above sea level) and the highlands (Tongkoh, 1340 m above sea level), using 10 genotypes of potatoes: VC.24.16, VC.38.6, FBA. 4, FFLS. 3, VC. 33.9, VC. 81.2, Jopung, Hertha, Granola, and DTO-33. The study examined the influence of genotypes and the environment on the quantitative properties of potato plants, as well as the interaction of both.

Results

The results showed that the environment had a significant effect on some of the properties of potato plants, such as plant height, number of stems, harvest age, tubers, percentage of tubers class A and C, production, and average tubers. However, the environment has no significant effect on the percentage of the number of tubers class B.

Effect of Height of Place

In general, the lower the height of the place, the higher the plant, the number of stems, the age of the harvest, and the percentage of the number of tubers class B and C. Conversely, the lower the height of the place, the lower the number of tubers, the percentage of the number of tubers class A, production, and tuber size average. This shows that potatoes tend to grow faster and produce more tubers in the medium plain, but the tubers produced tend to be smaller and have a higher percentage of B and C.

Genotype Variation

Genotypes also have a significant effect on plant height, number of stems, harvest age, number of tubers, percentage of tubers class A and C, average tubers, and production. However, it has no significant effect on the percentage of the number of tubers class B. Genotype VC.38.6 shows the highest production results in both locations, with production reaching 21.24 tons/ha in the highlands and 11.20 tons/ha in the medium plain. The interaction of genotype with the environment (GXL) is only real against the number of stems and production.

Genotype Adaptation

VC.38.6 is an ideal genotype that can adapt widely in the highlands and medium, so it has the potential to be developed in both locations. VC.38.6, FBA. 4, VC. 33.9, and VC. 81.2. shows special adaptation in the highlands, while DTO-33 is the only genotype that adapts specifically in the medium plain. Hertha genotype shows stability in both locations.

Genotype Selection for Industry

Based on genetic parameters (genetic variants, heritability, and genetic progress), more optimal selection is carried out in the highlands. Percentage of the number of tubers class A and C, the average tuber size, and production is an effective selected property for selection. Hertha and VC. 33.9 is a genotype that has met most of the criteria for processed potatoes. Hertha has an oval tuber shape, the number of medium shoots, shallow shoots, the percentage of large tubers, yellow skin and meat tubers, very tasty flavor, high specific gravity (1,059), and moderate relative total sugar content (4,71 %). VC. 33. 9 Has oval tubers, moderate bud number, shallow shoots depth, yellow tuber skin color, white tubers, good taste, large percentage of tubers, high specific gravity (1,077), and relative total sugar content quite high (5.0%).

Conclusion

This study shows that there are significant genetic variations in the adaptation and stability of potato genotypes in the highlands and mediums. VC.38.6 is a genotype that adapts broad and has the potential to be developed in both locations. Hertha and VC. 33.9 is a genotype that has a high potential to be used in the potato processing industry. Further research is needed to optimize potato cultivation in each location and to find new genotypes that have better production advantages and quality.
