In the bustling city of Medan, pedicab drivers play a vital role in providing transportation services to the public. However, their helmets, which are designed to protect their heads from injury, can also serve as a medium for the transmission of fungal infections. This study uses an observational descriptive approach with a latitude cut design. A total of 30 helmets collected from 30 different pedicab drivers were analyzed to find out the existence of dermatophytes. The inspection process uses the Media Sabaroud Dextrose Agar (SDA) for fungal culture and KOH coloring for the identification of mushroom species.

Research Result

The results showed that 25 of 30 pedicab drivers (83.3%) had never cleaned the helmet they used, while 5 pedicab drivers (16.7%) claimed to have cleaned the helmet. On a cultural examination with natural resource media, found 100% positive mushroom colonies from helmet scrapings. Through KOH staining, 16 species of fungi (53.3%) were identified which caused dermatophytosis and 14 other fungal species (46.7%) from the Nondermatophyte group.

Therefore, it is important to increase awareness of cleanliness and helmet care to prevent the spread of dermatophytosis and maintain public health. Education about the cleanliness of the head protective equipment is expected to be the first step in preventing fungal infections among pedicab drivers and the general public.
