Introduction

Conflict in the nurse's work environment in hospitals is a problem that often occurs. Based on data, 32.6% of conflicts occur between nurses and doctors, 27.3% between nurses, and 26.6% of the staff. The diversity of these situations requires supervisor nurses to apply various conflict management styles. This is where the importance of supervision competence, which includes knowledge, skills, and ability to deal with conflict. This article aims to analyze the relationship between supervision competencies and conflict management styles among supervisor nurses in government hospitals in Banda Aceh City.

Background of the Study

Conflict management is a crucial aspect of nursing practice, particularly in hospitals where diverse personalities and work styles often lead to conflicts. Supervisor nurses play a vital role in managing conflicts and maintaining a positive work environment. However, the effectiveness of their conflict management style depends on their supervision competencies, which include knowledge, skills, and ability to deal with conflict. The lack of supervision competencies can result in ineffective conflict management, leading to a negative impact on the quality of health services.

Research Design

Research conducted is a quantitative research with cross-sectional design, which was held in two hospitals: Regional General Hospital Dr. Zainoel Abidin (RSUDZA) and Regional Service Agency Mental Hospital (BLUDRSJ). The research subject consists of 77 supervisor nurses taken by the total sampling method. Data collection was carried out using a checklist questionnaire containing a questionnaire to evaluate the competency of their supervision and conflict management style.

Research Methodology

The research methodology used in this study is a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted in two government hospitals in Banda Aceh City, which are Regional General Hospital Dr. Zainoel Abidin (RSUDZA) and Regional Service Agency Mental Hospital (BLUDRSJ). The research subject consists of 77 supervisor nurses who were selected using the total sampling method. The data collection instrument used in this study is a checklist questionnaire that contains a questionnaire to evaluate the competency of their supervision and conflict management style.

Research Result

The results showed that 84.4% of supervisor nurses did not have adequate competence, while 92.2% of them often use the "Integrating Conflict Management Style." However, statistical tests using Chi Square revealed that there is no significant relationship between supervision competencies with conflict management styles consisting of dominating, integrating, compromising, avoiding, and obliging.

Analysis

This finding provides an interesting picture of the quality of supervision in the context of health services. The high percentage of incompetent supervisor nurses can be an indicator of weaknesses in their education and training systems. The incompatibility between the use of conflict management styles and the existing situation also implies the need to increase the ability in this regard.

Low supervision competencies can result in handling ineffective conflicts, which in turn can reduce the quality of overall health services. Given the importance of the role of supervisor nurses in managing conflicts in hospitals, there is an urgent need to improve their competencies through various ways, including training, workshops, seminars, and sustainable education.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that there is no significant relationship between supervision competencies and conflict management styles among supervisor nurses in government hospitals in Banda Aceh City. This finding is inconsistent with the expectation that supervisor nurses with higher supervision competencies would use more effective conflict management styles. However, this finding can be attributed to the fact that the majority of supervisor nurses in this study did not have adequate competence.

Conclusion

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between supervision competencies and conflict management styles among supervisor nurses in government hospitals in Banda Aceh City. The results of this study indicate that there is no significant relationship between supervision competencies and conflict management styles among supervisor nurses in government hospitals in Banda Aceh City. This finding provides an interesting picture of the quality of supervision in the context of health services.

Recommendation

Given the results of this study, it is important for health institutions to evaluate training and development programs for supervisor nurses. In addition, there is a need for policies that encourage increased competencies in the fields of supervision and conflict management. Thus, it is expected that the quality of supervision in hospitals will increase and conflicts that occur can be better managed, improving the quality of health services to patients.

Limitation of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in only two government hospitals in Banda Aceh City, which may not be representative of all government hospitals in Indonesia. Secondly, the study used a quantitative approach, which may not capture the complexity of the relationship between supervision competencies and conflict management styles.

This study provides a foundation for future research on the relationship between supervision competencies and conflict management styles among supervisor nurses in government hospitals. Future studies can explore the factors that influence the relationship between supervision competencies and conflict management styles, such as education and training programs, work experience, and personal characteristics.
